Cantata "Mujeres Argentinas"

On November 14, 2019 the Embassy of Argentina and The Latin American Music Center at Rome School of Music Drama and Art at CUA celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Cantata “Mujeres Argentinas” by Ariel Ramirez and Felix Luna with the presentation of an homage to the Argentine women that played an active role in the country’s liberation performed by Argentine artists Nilda Chiarello (voice) and Jose Ramos Santana (piano).

The cantata began with the song about the immigrants that arrived in Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century. “Mujeres Argentinas” included eight songs dedicated to eight women that built our history: Juana Azurduy, a fighter; Rosario Vera, a teacher; the beloved poetess, Alfonsina Storni, and Manuela Pedraza, a woman who fought during the two English invasions at the beginning of the XIX century. “Mujeres Argentinas” was first recorded by Mercedes Sosa in 1969 and became one of her hits.

Ariel Ramírez was an Argentine composer, pianist and music director that is considered "a chief exponent of Argentine folk music". Ramírez is known primarily for his “Misa Criolla” (1964). However, he wrote more than 300 compositions during his career, and sold millions of albums.

Writer and historian Félix Luna collaborated with pianist and composer Ariel Ramírez as a lyricist for the “Misa Criolla”. This joint success was followed by “Mujeres Argentinas”.
