A Night of Argentine Tango and Folk Music Featuring Mavi Díaz & Las Folkies + María Volonté: Blue Tango Project

Direct from Argentina, two path-breaking bands lead by women bring the best of Argentine tango and folk music to the stage. Lead by Argentine musical powerhouse Mavi Díaz, the band Mavi Díaz & Las Folkies is reinvigorating the rich folk traditions of Argentina with their original compositions, feminine point of view and electrifying live performances. Hailing from the colorful and gritty La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, María Volonté: Blue Tango Project is a ground-breaking exploration of the emotional and musical crossroads where tango and the blues embrace. It is collaboration between Argentine Latin Grammy nominee María Volonté and California harmonica player Kevin Carrel Footer. Reception after the performance.

María Volonté

An Argentine singer and songwriter who is a Carlos Gardel Prize winner (Argentina’s Grammy), a Latin Grammy nominee and member of the Tango Hall of Fame. She has shared the stage with Astor Piazzolla’s legendary last quintet, recorded duets with trumpter Arturo Sandoval and counts among her many fans Paquito D’Rivera and Derek Sivers (founder of CD Baby) who included Volonté in the list of artists he was proudest to have released while founding the seminal online music distributor.

Mavi Díaz & Las Folkies
This all-female band is deeply steeped in the Argentine folk tradition. Daughter of harmonica virtuoso Hugo Díaz, Mavi was surrounded by the best music from an early age. A pop star in her twenties as a founding member of the path-breaking group Viuda e Hijas de Roque Enroll. After many years living and working in Spain, Mavi returned to Argentina and founded the band Mavi Diaz & Las Folkies in 2010 to explore new expressive possibilities within the venerable Argentine folk tradition.

Kevin Carrel Footer

Kevin Carrel Footer (KCF), originally from California, he moved to Buenos Aires in 1992 to begin the spiritual practice of tango. He is the author of the book “A Tango before I Die” (2013). Playing harmonica, Footer tours the world with the Blue Tango Project alongside Argentine Latin Grammy-nominee María Volonté. He is the founder of Intrepid Patrol, a record label and boutique artist management company whose recordings have won a Carlos Gardel Prize (Argentina’s Grammy) and three Carlos Gardel Prize nominations, as well as a Latin Grammy nomination.
